ভিডিও দেখুন: আমরণ এটাই আমাদের রুজিরুটি

২০১৯ সালে বাকিংহাম খাল সংলগ্ন অঞ্চলে ঘোরাফেরা করতে গিয়ে প্রথমবার দেখি তাঁকে। পানকৌড়ির মতো যেভাবে জলে ডুবসাঁতার দিচ্ছিলেন, তাতে চোখে না পড়ে যাবেন কোথায়! নদীবক্ষের কর্কশ বালিতে হাত ডুবিয়ে তীরবেগে তুলে আনছিলেন চিংড়ি, তাঁর মতো ক্ষিপ্রতায় সেখানে আর কাউকে মাছ ধরতে দেখলাম না।

তামিলনাডু রাজ্যে তফসিলি জনগোষ্ঠী হিসেবে নথিভুক্ত ইরুলার জনজাতির মানুষ গোভিন্দাম্মা ভেলু। চেন্নাইয়ের উপকণ্ঠে বয়ে চলা কোসস্তালাইয়ার নদীতে সেই শিশুকাল থেকেই চিংড়ি ধরে আসছেন গোভিন্দাম্মা। ক্ষীণ হয়ে আসা দুটি চোখ, কাটাছেঁড়ায় ভরা হাত — সবকিছু উপেক্ষা করে পারিবারিক অনটন ঘোচাতে আশি ছুঁইছুঁই এই বৃদ্ধা আজও প্রাণপাত করছেন নদীর জলে।

বাকিংহাম খালে কর্মরত গোভিন্দাম্মার এই ভিডিওটি আমি চেন্নাইয়ের উত্তরভাগে তুলেছিলাম, কোসস্তালাইয়ার নদীর কাছেই। ডুবসাঁতার কেটে চিংড়ি ধরার ফাঁকে ফাঁকে উঠে এসেছে তাঁর আত্মকথা, এবং এই কাজটি ছাড়া আর কিছুই যে তিনি পারেন না — সেটাও শোনা যাবে গোভিন্দাম্মার কথায়।

Palani has received the Amplify grant in 2021, and Samyak Drishti and Photo South Asia Grant in 2020. He received the first Dayanita Singh-PARI Documentary Photography Award in 2022. Palani was also the cinematographer of ‘Kakoos' (Toilet), a Tamil-language documentary exposing the practice of manual scavenging in Tamil Nadu.
