Let's Dance with Ainam

FOCUS

This book has been written by Auswyn Winter Japang and illustrated by Casper Syiem. It has been published by Sauramandala Foundation, Meghalaya, as part of The Forgotten Folklore Project (TFFP) which brings to life 65 stories from communities in Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India. The story books, developed in collaboration with local artists, aim to contribute to early childhood education and disseminate knowledge on local nature, culture, foods, garments, kitchens, and more.

Ainam, a young girl, prepares a dance for the Shad Suk Mynsiem festival or “dance with a joyous soul”. The festival is celebrated by the Khasi community in Meghalaya where people come together to honour the god and seek blessings through dance, singing and prayers. Ainam is taught the dance by her Mei (a Khasi word for mother) who tells her that the dance is believed to have been taught to the people by Ka Pahsyntiew, the legendary queen of Shillong chiefdom and an important figure in local folklore. "It's a way for us to say "thanks" through movement," Mei explains. This short 18-page book has colourful illustrations and takes readers through the steps of the dance and its cultural significance. It is available in English, Khasi, Pnar, Garo – with more translations to come on Storyweaver by Pratham Books.
