Falcon Superheroes has been written by Mebanda Iaka Blah Dkhar and illustrated by P. Mario K. Pathaw. Set in Tyrso village, this story unfolds with the arrival of migratory birds Amur Falcons. While some boys in the village wish to harm the birds, the Falcon Superheroes are determined to protect them. Published by the Sauramandala Foundation, the book is a part of The Forgotten Folklore Project (TFFP) which brings to life 65 stories from communities in Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India. The story books, developed in collaboration with local artists, aim to contribute to early childhood education and disseminate knowledge on local nature, culture, foods, garments, kitchens, and more.
On a chilly day, Melam and his friends are playing at pretending to be superheroes when Bor, the village bully, mocks them and calls then "weak". Bor’s friends arrive with news that the migratory birds Amur Falcons have returned and remind him of his plan to catch them at night. At home, Melam asks his mother, Mei, if harming the falcons is right. She explains their importance: they eat pests that damage crops and attract tourists, benefiting the village in many ways. She also reveals that the Rangbah Shnong, the village head, has trained special geese to protect the birds at night.
Determined to act, Melam sneaks out at night to warn Bor but arrives to find the geese already confronting him and his friends. The birds peck Bor, forcing him to promise never to harm anyone again. The next day, Bor who is injured and subdued, admits he hadn’t realised the falcons’ value. Melam shares his mother’s teachings and vows that the Superhero Squad will spread awareness about the birds. Bor asks to join the squad, and Melam gladly welcomes him, saying that anyone can be a superhero.
