Ban’s Journey in Music

FOCUS

Ban’s Journey in Music has been written by Nida Hynniewta and illustrated by Arban Mawthoh. This book was published by Sauramandala Foundation, Meghalaya, as part of The Forgotten Folklore Project (TFFP) which brings to life 65 stories from communities in Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India. The story books, developed in collaboration with local artists, aim to contribute to early childhood education and disseminate knowledge on local nature, culture, foods, garments, kitchens, and more.

In this story, music flows through Wahkhen village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills. Children start to develop a relationship with music at an early age, but Ban, a young boy, finds it difficult to do so. Growing up surrounded by melodies, Ban dreams of playing instruments like his father and siblings do. He tries the bom, duitara, tangmuri and ksing kynthei but struggles – his hands ache, the sounds are off and he can’t find the rhythm.

One day, Babu Toki, founder of the Seiñ Riti – a folk music school – comforts him, explaining that music comes from the heart and everyone has their unique sound, even without mastering an instrument. The story follows Ban as he finds his sound and learns to play the padiah and many other instruments. His journey inspires readers to be patient, persevering and creative, discovering inspiration in unexpected places.

The 23-page book is available in English, KhasiPnarGaroTamil – with more translations to come on Storyweaver by Pratham Books.
