Ilari's Jaiñsem
फ़ोकस
Ilari’s Jaiñsem, written and illustrated by Samanda N Pyngrope, invites readers to join a young protagonist in learning more about her culture. This book was published by Sauramandala Foundation, Meghalaya, as part of The Forgotten Folklore Project (TFFP) which brings to life 65 stories from communities in Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India. The story books, developed in collaboration with local artists, aim to contribute to early childhood education and disseminate knowledge on local nature, culture, foods, garments, kitchens, and more.
Set in the hilly Khasi village of Roibha during the annual spring festival of Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem, the story follows young Ilari – fondly called Lari – who is mesmerised by her mother’s graceful attire, a silk jaiñsem. Eager to wear one herself, she turns to her mei ieit (maternal grandmother) to learn its significance. Through Ilari’s eyes, we explore the customs, the dos and don’ts, and the cultural significance of this traditional attire.
Mei ieit introduces Lari to the basics – first comes a blouse and skirt, then the jaiñsem made from two rectangular pieces of fabric. Mei ieit then educates Lari about the dhara, a silk jaiñsem worn on special days, before choosing for her a nylon jaiñsem suitable for daily wear. She teaches her the careful steps of draping it and explains the importance of the shrong which is the embroidered border.
Step by step, Lari learns how to wrap, fold, and pin the jaiñsem properly, embracing the precision and significance behind every action. When she finally manages to wear it correctly, Mei ieit finishes the look with a shawl. Just then, Lari’s mother returns and is delighted to see her daughter dressed in her own jaiñsem. The story closes with an excited Lari, proud of what she’s learned – not just about the attire but also the heritage it carries.
The 24-page book is full of evocative watercolour illustrations and available in English, Khasi, Pnar, Garo, Hindi, Tamil – with more translations to come.
