He lives in a small rented house on the outskirts of Bhandara city, and she moved into his home with all her belongings; he is now her mother and father. Urvashi’s parents have no money. They are small farmers in Dawwa village, about 25 kilometres from Bhandara city. But the young girl’s mother Madhuri felt if her daughter had to have a chance to become something, she had to trust this young man and his dreams for her daughter.

Speaking to&nbsp; PARI on a&nbsp; summer morning in 2024 at Bhandara's Shivaji Stadium, Tandekar says that Urvashi is a special kid.&nbsp;<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);box-sizing:border-box;color:rgb(51, 51, 51);font-family:&quot;Fira Sans&quot;, &quot;Open Sans&quot;, sans-serif;font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;line-height:29px;margin:0px 0px 20px;orphans:2;text-align:left;text-decoration-color:initial;text-decoration-style:initial;text-decoration-thickness:initial;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;">In Bhandara, he runs an academy aptly christened Anath Pindak – saviour of the orphaned. To fund his nearly 50 pupils of all ages, he raises money through small donations, barely managing the show.&nbsp;A short man with a round face and sharp, doting eyes, tells his aspiring rural runners to never fear failure or setback.

He tells them stories of some of India’s runners to inspire them from examples like P.T. Usha and others who made it big despite the odds. His pupils think they too can make it big if they work hard and dream big.<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);box-sizing:border-box;color:rgb(51, 51, 51);font-family:&quot;Fira Sans&quot;, &quot;Open Sans&quot;, sans-serif;font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;line-height:29px;margin:0px 0px 20px;orphans:2;text-align:left;text-decoration-color:initial;text-decoration-style:initial;text-decoration-thickness:initial;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;">Learning from his own journey, Tandekar focuses on her diet and nutrition, something as basic as milk and eggs that he never got to eat regularly. Urvashi's diet, he ensures, has proteins, carbohydrates and fats. His sister, who lives in Bhandara, brings fish, available there in season. Urvashi’s mother regularly drops by&nbsp; to check on her daughter and help her with her school and regular chores.<p style="-webkit-text-stroke-width:0px;background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);box-sizing:border-box;color:rgb(51, 51, 51);font-family:&quot;Fira Sans&quot;, &quot;Open Sans&quot;, sans-serif;font-size:17px;font-style:normal;font-variant-caps:normal;font-variant-ligatures:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;line-height:29px;margin:0px 0px 20px;orphans:2;text-align:left;text-decoration-color:initial;text-decoration-style:initial;text-decoration-thickness:initial;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;widows:2;word-spacing:0px;">The coach makes sure that his mentee has good shoes, something he never had growing up. His dad, he says, was a landless labourer, hardly ever able to make ends meet. And he drank excessively, spending his meagre earnings on a bottle every day. Younger, media-saturated generations are growing up knowing little about their country, but a lot about the elites of a few metros and towns. For a narrowly-owned, commercially-driven media, the dumbing down of a nation is part of standard operating procedure. The last available data of the Centre for Media Studies (CMS, Delhi) show us that reports from New Delhi account for 66 per cent of news on the front pages of major dailies. The CMS data also found that just about 0.24 per cent of front page news came out of rural India. The TV channels are not much better.PARI exists to change that.We are a non-profit organisation. We publish under creative commons, and do not charge readers a subscription fee or put-up advertisements. Nothing is behind a paywall and we are completely free-to-access by anyone. We guard our independence and receive no direct grants from governments and corporations, nor any funding that could dictate our content.
