The Stone Giants

The Stone Giants is a story based on a folktale on monoliths in the picturesque village of Nartiang in Meghalaya. It has been written by Eleanor Sangma and illustrated by P. Mario K. Pathaw. This imaginative tale explores themes of community bond, cultural heritage, heroic strength and divine protection. 

The book was published by Sauramandala Foundation, Meghalaya, as part of The Forgotten Folklore Project (TFFP) which brings to life 65 stories from communities in Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India. The books, developed in collaboration with local artists, aim to contribute to early childhood education and disseminate knowledge on local nature, culture, foods, garments, kitchens, and more.

The story centers on Eilad, a curious boy, who accompanies his Bei (mother) to the bustling Nartiang market, carrying a heavy munajun (traditional sling bag) full of groceries. There, Kong (an elderly woman) compares his strength to the legendary Mar Phalyngki, filling him with pride and sparking his curiosity. Mar Phalyngki was the legendary man who is believed to have brought huge monoliths to their village. He carried massive stones single-handedly to bring the goddess Iaw Blai from Raliang to Nartiang, establishing the village market. He even struck a deal with the goddess – in exchange of sacrifice, she would protect the community, especially pregnant women and mothers.
