Meteorological Subdivision-wise Annual Rainfall: 2002-2011

FOCUS

This document by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) contains data for the annual rainfall of the country’s meteorological subdivisions from 2002-2011. For the years 2010 and 2011, ‘normal rainfall’ and ‘percentage change with respect to normal rainfall’ are also calculated. Normal rainfall is calculated by the IMD using rainfall records from 1951 to 2000.

    FACTOIDS

  1. Of India’s 36 meteorological subdivisions, Rajasthan West had the lowest rainfall every year between 2002 and 2011. In 2002, it recorded its lowest annual rainfall of 118.9 millimetres for this period.

  2. Five subdivisions – Konkan and Goa, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh – recorded an annual rainfall of more than 2,000 millimetres every year between 2002 and 2011.

  3. In 2002, the drought-prone Rayalaseema subdivision recorded its lowest annual rainfall (504.4 millimetres) between 2002 and 2011.

  4. In 2011, Coastal Karnataka had an annual rainfall of 4,146.4 millimetres – the most any meteorological subdivision received between 2002 and 2011.
