Paddy farming has destroyed many farmers’ livelihoods in Punjab, say farmers from Mansa and Barnala districts. They speak of the prices the state had promised for crops and the low rates at which their harvest was bought. An elderly Gurjant Singh from Alisher Kalan village in Mansa says, “A farmer’s life is full of sadness.”
