’’مجھے معلوم ہے کہ یہ کسان یہاں کیوں ہیں‘‘، ناسک کے
سُیوجِت کامپلیکس میں واقع ایک کارپوریٹ کمپنی کے ۳۷ سالہ آفس اسسٹنٹ، چندرکانت
پاٹیکر نے کہا۔ پاٹیکر نہ ۲۰ فروری کو شام ۶ بجے کے آس پاس اپنا کام ختم ہی کیا
تھا جب ہزاروں کسان اس راستے سے ممبئی ناکہ کے میدان کی طرف نکلے۔

’’گاؤوں میں، پانی کی ہر بوند اہمیت رکھتی ہے۔
پانی کی تلاش میں لوگوں کو کئی کئی کلومیٹر پیدل چلنا پڑتا ہے۔ شہر میں نہاتے وقت،
ہم ہر بار ۲۵-۳۰ لیٹر پانی برباد کر دیتے ہیں،‘‘ پاٹیکر نے کہا۔ انھوں نے بتایا کہ
وہ کسانوں کے بحران کو جانتے ہیں، کیوں کہ وہ جس مالیاتی کمپنی میں کام کرتے ہیں
وہاں سے لیے گئے قرضوں کو چکانے وقت اُن کسانوں کو جدوجہد کرتے ہوئے دیکھتے ہیں۔
’’ہمارے کئی صارفین کسان ہیں۔ وہ ہمیں بتاتے ہیں کہ کھیتی کے لیے پانی نہیں ہے،
اسی لیے وہ ہمیں اپنی قسطیں نہیں چکا سکتے۔‘‘

کسان جب مارچ کر رہے تھے، تو پاٹیکر (نیلی شرٹ
میں، اوپر کی تصویر میں، اشارہ کرتے ہوئے) اور ایک دوسری کمپنی کے ان کے دوست نے
اپنے آفس بلڈنگ کی چھت سے تصویریں اور سیلفی لی۔ پاٹیکر کو لگتا ہے کہ موجودہ
حکومت کے پاس کسانوں کو بچانے کی قوتِ ارادی نہیں ہے۔ ’’انھوں نے چار برسوں میں
کسانوں کی مدد نہیں کی، تو اب چار مہینے میں کیسے کر سکتے ہیں؟‘‘ حالانکہ انھیں
خوشی ہے کہ سرکار نے اب کسانوں کے مطالبات کو پورا کرنے کا وعدہ کیا ہے۔

Younger, media-saturated generations are growing up knowing little about their country, but a lot about the elites of a few metros and towns. For a narrowly-owned, commercially-driven media, the dumbing down of a nation is part of standard operating procedure. The last available data of the Centre for Media Studies (CMS, Delhi) show us that reports from New Delhi account for 66 per cent of news on the front pages of major dailies. The CMS data also found that just about 0.24 per cent of front page news came out of rural India. The TV channels are not much better.PARI exists to change that.We are a non-profit organisation.
