మేము అతనిని చూశాం. కానీ చూసింది నమ్మలేదు. దగ్గరగా కారు తీసుకెళ్లి, దిగి, అతని కేసి తేరిపారా చూశాం . మేము చూసింది నిజమే. అయినా సరే, మేము నమ్మలేదు. రతన్ బిశ్వాస్ తన సైకిల్ పైన అయిదు వెదురు బొంగులు - ఒక్కోటి 40-45 అడుగుల పొడవు ఉన్నవి - తాడు వేసి కట్టేశాడు. తన గ్రామం నుంచి 17 కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలో ఉన్న త్రిపుర రాజధాని అగర్తలాలో మార్కెట్ కు ఈ బరువు తోసుకుని వెడుతున్నాడు. సైకిల్ దాటి విస్తరించిన వెదురు బొంగుల కొసలు కనుక చిన్న రాతిని కానీ, రోడ్డు మీద బొడిపెలను కానీ తాకాయా, సైకిల్, సైకిల్ యజమాని, వెదురు కట్టెలు - అన్నీ మహా బాధాకరమైన పద్ధతిలో కింద కుప్పకూలుతాయి. వెదురు బొంగులకు ఉన్నదానికంటే తేలికగా కనిపించే ఒక లక్షణం ఉంది. రెండు కర్రలను కలిపి గట్టిగా కట్టివేయడంతో అయిదు బొంగులు నాలుగులా కనిపిస్తున్నాయి. ఈ అయిదు కట్టెల కలిసిన బరువు 200 కిలోలు. బిశ్వాస్ కి ఆ సంగతి తెలుసు. మాతో సరదాగా మాట్లాడిన బిశ్వాస్ తన విచిత్రమైన సామానుని ఫోటో తీస్తామంటే సంతోషంగానే అంగీకరించాడు. కానీ మేము ఆ సైకిల్ ముందుకి నడిపించేందుకు ప్రయత్నిస్తాం అంటే మాత్రం ఒప్పుకోలేదు. దానిలో ఉన్న ప్రమాదం ఏమిటో అతనికి తెలుసు.
 
 ' కేవలం అయిదు అడుగుల పొడుగు ఉన్న ఆ సైకిల్ పైన ఆ పొడవాటి వెదురు బొంగులు - అంత బరువు - అసలు ఎలా మోసుకెళ్లగలవు ?'   బిశ్వాస్ చిరునవ్వు నవ్వాడు. సైకిలుకి అమర్చి ఉన్న చెక్క పట్టీలను మాకు చూపించాడు. అవి కూడా వెదురుతో చేసినవే. సైకిల్ ముందు భాగంలో రెండు నిలువుగా పెట్టాడు. అవి మళ్ళీ పైకి సైకిల్ అడ్డం బార్ వైపు వచ్చాయి. ఆ పైన వాటిని కలిపి కట్టాడు. మరో వెదురు చెక్క పట్టీని బైక్ కారియర్ మీద అడ్డంగా అమర్చాడు.

అంటే రెండు వెదురు బొంగులని అడ్డం బార్ వెంబడే కట్టి, ముందున్న చెక్క పట్టీల మీదా, వెనుక కారియర్ మీద చెక్క పట్టీ మీద అనుకునేలా అమర్చాడు అన్నమాట. మిగిలిన పెద్ద బొంగులు ముందు భాగం లో హ్యాండిల్ బార్ మీద, వెనుక సీట్ మీద ఆనుకుని, జాయింట్ల వద్ద కట్టి ఉన్నాయి. ఈ మొత్తం ఏర్పాటు వల్ల రవాణా చేస్తున్న వెదురుబొంగులు కింద పడిపోకుండా ఉన్నాయి. అయితే వాటిని రోడ్డు మీద తీసుకుని వెళ్లడం మాత్రం తేలిక కాదు. నిజానికి ఈ ప్రయాణానికి చేసే ప్రయత్నం వెన్ను విరిచేసేంత శ్రమతో కూడుకున్నది. జీవనోపాధి గడించేందుకు, నలుగురు సభ్యుల తన కుటుంబాన్ని పోషించేందుకు బిశ్వాస్ చేసే పనుల్లో ఇది ఒకటి. “ నేనూ, నా భార్య, ఇద్దరు కొడుకులు." "మా గ్రామం పశ్చిమ త్రిపుర జిల్లాలోని జిరానియా బ్లాక్ లో ఉంది. భవన నిర్మాణంలో పని దొరికినప్పుడు నేను రోజు కూలీగా పని చేస్తుంటాను. " లేదా సీజన్లో అతను వ్యవసాయ కూలీ. లేదా సామాను మోసే పోర్టర్.

వెదురుబొంగుల మొత్తం పొడవుతో నాలుగోవంతు కంటే తక్కువ మాత్రమే సైకిల్ ముందు భాగంలో ఉంది. బొంగులో ప్రధాన భాగం వెనకకు పొడుచుకుని వచ్చింది. ఆ వెనక కొసలు కింద నేలకు తగలకుండా ఎలా ఉన్నాయో మాకు ఇంకా అర్థం కావడంలేదు. మా ఆశ్చర్యం చూసి బిశ్వాస్ ఓర్పుగా చిరునవ్వు నవ్వాడు.
 
 
 “లేదు. ఈ వెదురు బొంగులు నేను కోయలేదు. అది చాలా కష్టమైన పని.  మా ఊరికి ఎవరో తెస్తే కొంటాను." ఈ మొత్తం కట్టెలను అతను అగర్తలా మార్కెట్లో అమ్మితే 200 రూపాయల నికర లాభం గడిస్తాడు. బిశ్వాస్ ప్రయాణానికి ఇంతకంటే దగ్గర దారులు ఉన్నాయని నాతో పాటు ఉన్న నా సహప్రయాణీకుడు, త్రిపుర కేంద్రీయ విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో జర్నలిజం, మాస్ కమ్యూనికేషన్ శాఖలో అధ్యాపకుడు సునీల్ కాలై
 
 
 చెప్పారు. అయితే, అతి విచిత్రమైన తన సామానుని ఆ మార్గాల్లో తీసుకుపోవడం బిశ్వాస్ కి  కష్టమౌతుండవచ్చు . మేము మళ్ళీ కారు ఎక్కి పక్క జిల్లాలోని అంబాసాకి బయలుదేరాం. తన సైకిల్ కి ఉన్న పొడుగాటి తోక మెల్లిగా అటూ ఇటూ ఊగుతుంటే, బిశ్వాస్ రెండో వైపు తన ప్రయాణాన్ని తిరిగి ప్రారంభించాడు.
